There may be a requirement to remove the hang-off following damage to a cable, or when the cable has reached the end of the operational life, how do you remove the ‘resin filled’ hang-off?
The short answer is that it is very difficult and very time consuming and offshore time is expensive!
Case Study #1:
Several cables had to be removed and replaced shortly after installation, but the problem was discovered after the resin in the hang-off had cured. A dive team were mobilised to cut the cable at the exit of the CPS, then the entire hang-off was detached from the TP flange and lifted. The cable and hang-off had to be held in position above the TP flange and the cable cut into short sections to be removed.
The operation required many teams of offshore personnel, including Dive spread and the supporting vessels and associated sub-contractors working around the clock. The cost of the removal and replacement operations ran to € Millions.
Case Study #2:
A damaged cable needed to be removed to allow the installation of a new cable. The existing cable was secured by a resin filed hang-off. Using a range of power tools, the offshore teams took over three days, working 8 hour shifts to remove one resin filled hang-off.
Is there an alternative to using resin?
The Subsea Cable Hang-offs supplied by Kintech Energy Limited are free from resin and the removal process is the reverse of the installation process. No resin means that the parts of the hang-off can be re-used or re-cycled which also eliminate disposal issues related to contamination of parts by the cured resin.
The Kintech Resin Free Hang-off (RFHO) protects the health and well-being of the cable installation teams, reduces removal time (and cost) and can be easily recycled (or re-used).
